Bert Hellinger is widely regarded as one of the most influential, provocative and effective psychotherapists working in the German-speaking world today. A former priest and missionary among the African Zulus, he is what is called in German a Seelsorger, a “caretaker of souls,” one who ministers to people’s deepest spiritual questions and difficulties. Working at the interface of psychotherapy and spirituality, he dares to go where most psychotherapists or clergy will not, to the most basic issues of birth and death, illness and incest, suicide and genocide. He is the wisest man I know.
Using his unique development of the method of family constellations, Bert Hellinger has been able to help many thousands of individuals and families come to a greater degree of freedom from constricting entanglements with ancestral patterns, and thereby achieve a more harmonious family life. His observations and methods of working with family constellations are described in detail in dozens of books and training videos.
In the present volume, he has given us some of the distilled essence of his many years of practice and observation, in the form of jewel-like aphorisms and epigrams, little stories, and the affirmations he calls “statements of power.” Here the Seelsorger has become a Wahrsager, a “truth-speaker” or “soothsayer” – in the literal meaning of the Old English “sooth” as “truth.” To hear the truth spoken, it was believed, had a soothing effect on the anxious or tormented soul – and so do these sayings and stories open one to a calm, compassionate, and balanced perspective on the often disturbing vagaries of human existence.
